Tahni Holt Benefit Saturday March 31

Featuring:
TAHNI HOLT with Robert Tyree, Lucy Yim and musician Thomas Thorson: Hot off their performance at Movement Research at Judson Church in NYC, Tahni and Dancers perform an excerpt of SUNSHINE, a duet between performers Robert Tyree and Lucy Yim. SUNSHINE seduces many logics into embodiment: sculpture, glamour, little cities, mass production, homeless camps and resourcefulness.

TAHNI HOLT + NATE QUERY: A rare opportunity to experience a duet between Nate with his stand up bass and Tahni with her 8 ½ month pregnant belly. A quartet of sorts, Nate and Tahni have constructed a dance of obstructions, destinations and shapes.

LINDA K. JOHNSON: Will perform her TEDX dance Lecture The Habit of Being. In the wonderful tradition of master dance artist Simone Forti, she will be moving dancing, (otherwise known as dancing and talking).

AMY O/tinyrage: Known to Portland audiences for her groundbreaking performances in PICA’s TBA Festival (2003 + 2009) as well has her work with Reggie Watts, she brings the work in progress The Most Innovative, Daring, and Original Piece of Dance/Performance You Will See This Decade. The piece deconstructs some of Amy O’s past and recent influences (Hip Hop culture, classicism, Cyndi Lauper, Ciara, Big Boi, MTV, You Tube, Dub Step, money, feminism, the economics of the body) and questions the way performance is sold and bought through the female perspective.

Tickets will be sold at the door.

SUNSHINE is supported in part by a grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council.

Technical Director/Lighting Designer for the event: Alex Gagne-Hawes

Preview: Hope Mohr April 1st!

Hope Mohr Dance is coming North! The company will perform March 29 and 30 at Velocity Dance Center in Seattle, WA, and April 1 at the mOuth. The Company’s touring program includes Reluctant Light (2012) and Plainsong (2011). In addition to performances Mohr will present master classes in both cities.

The S.F. Examiner has described Mohr’s work as “like Zen calligraphy” and “humanistic.” Mohr’s movement blends pedestrian, modern and classical forms to create “a unique and exquisite aesthetic” (Daily Californian). The S.F. Bay Guardian called the company’s 2010 home season “rigorously crafted” and “unusually satisfying.”

The Pacific Northwest tour program will feature the premiere of Mohr’s Reluctant Light with music by cellist Helen Money and set design by Zakary Zide. In Reluctant Light six dancers explore what it means to surrender. Mohr explained, “In the words of poet Carolyn Forche, ‘We are so made that nothing contents us.’ Only when we surrender to the ephemeral can we experience freedom and intimacy. But how do we surrender?

Plainsong (2011) is Mohr’s first solo performance since she was a member of the Trisha Brown Dance Company 2000-2005. It features music by Erin Gee and a set design by Katrina Rodabaugh. Inspired by the figure of Penelope in The Odyssey, this poetic dance combines classical and contemporary tropes of weaving, waiting and female inner life. Plainsong premiered at the 2011 San Francisco International Arts Festival to critical acclaim. Portions of Plainsong were made during an Irvine Fellowship in the Lucas Artist Residency Program at the Montalvo Arts Center.

Tickets go on sale March 1st. Visit brownpapertickets.com or call 1-800-838-3006.

For more information on Hope Mohr and her tour please visit the company website at www.hopemohr.org or read their blog at www.hopemohrdance.wordpress.com.

Another Weekend for Children’s Games!

Seth Nehil and his cast are having a marvelous time with Children’s Games. The set is struck for the mOuth’s weekly dance classes but the haunting chords of their music remain.

Look forward to another weekend November 4, 5 and 6. Nightly at 8 pm. We have earplugs for the parts that get scary and loud.
